Do you ever feel like you can’t see past the next hour? Day? Week? It’s hard to imagine the future when you can’t imagine life beyond today. The best meditation benefits help you see past everything. But why do you need meditation?
You dream of doing something meaningful with your life – going back to school, starting a business, or reconnecting with your spouse. But you can’t visualize a way to get there because life is so heavy. Heavy with anxieties, opinions, distractions, and often pain. I know the feeling. I did the same thing every day for years, knowing I wanted more but lacking the foresight to see anything bigger.
How do you make a change for your future when you’re too busy with today’s worries?
Listen, my friend: you can change your life. I see people do it every day in my Stillness to Success course. But you don’t have to do it alone. I’m here to support you, and so is meditation. Today, we’ll walk through meditation benefits that ultimately lead you to the change you want to see.
What is Meditation Good For? 4 Meditation Benefits
The first twenty minutes of my mornings are a taste of bliss. Meeting name? Meditation. Recurring daily.
I could have the most stressful, packed day ahead of me yet feel sharp and prepared to tackle it after meditation. But the practice is much more than a chill pill. Here are some meditation benefits that will change your life.
#1: Meditation Makes You Sharp
Do you ever have trouble concentrating at work? I know those moments. You know what you need to get done, but your mind just. Won’t. Listen.
It’s fogged up with worries and distractions, ready to shift focus with one passing thought.
Now, take a few minutes to meditate. Scan your body for tension; take some deep belly breaths. It’s crazy what only a few minutes can do to calm and clear the mind.
That’s just after one session. What happens if you meditate everyday?
Stillness comes, and clarity follows. People who meditate experience mental stability – focused attention, sensory clarity, and calm emotion.
When the mind is clear, anything is possible. The fog clears up, and you can visualize a game plan – for your business, relationships, and long-term goals.
Is there a physical barrier slowing you down? It may come as a surprise, but meditation might offer some relief.
#2: Meditation Reduces Pain
Many of us know how debilitating back pain can be, especially as millions of people continue working from home and remotely.
Of course, exercise and yoga can offer some relief. But guess what: so does meditation. The fact that physical benefits of meditation exist is genuinely remarkable. The work happens in the mind, so how does meditation help the body?
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) wondered the same thing. That’s why they funded two studies in 2016 to dive deeper, and here’s what they found:
- People with chronic lower back pain experienced better results (improved physical function) using a combination of standard medical care and meditation than those who only received standard care.
Another study examined meditation’s effects on inflammation, often triggered by psychological distress. Inflammation is your immune system’s reaction to a bodily threat. But too much inflammation causes pain and fatigue. So, what was the verdict? Practicing meditation over time may soothe chronic inflammation.
Next time you treat your chronic pain, be it through a prescribed pill or other treatment, try to squeeze in some meditation. Take five minutes each day to manifest that pain going away. It just might!
To be clear: meditation isn’t a substitute for medication. But the science suggests that it could be an excellent complement to medication in reducing pain.
Inflammation seems to have countless causes, but one of them is smoking.
#3: Meditation Helps You Quit Smoking
If you’re a smoker, you’ve probably thought of these rationalizations before:
“I can quit whenever I want.”
“I’m only a social smoker.”
“If I stop, I might gain weight.”
We all have bad habits. Smoking is a tough one to shake. But deep down, you know the truth: the chemical addiction to tobacco’s nicotine overpowers the desire to quit.
It might not feel like it now, but smoking cessation changes your life.
You feel more energetic, get sick less often, and lower your risk for many diseases. That’s why this is one of my favorite meditation benefits.
But how does meditation help you quit smoking?
To answer that, let’s first look at how smoking becomes a habit. On top of the addiction, experts attribute smoking to low self-control and high stress levels. Those same experts wondered if mindfulness could tackle stress and self-control to encourage smoking cessation.
The results? Meditation helps you stop smoking by:
- Reducing cravings
- Improving self-control capacity
That self-control trickles into all aspects of life. You learn that when it comes to pursuing an intention, giving up isn’t an option.
Now, let’s move on to one of the more spiritual benefits of meditation.
#4: Meditation Fosters Connection
By nature, we aren’t lone wolves. Even if you’re an introvert, you can’t go months without talking to someone without feeling lonely. We crave connection – with people, nature, and even things greater than ourselves.
Go for a walk after a meditation session. You might feel a greater sense of “oneness” with every observation you make. Smell the flowers; feel the crisp air against your face; appreciate the vastness of a forest.
Meditation encourages us to look within for happiness and answers. When we embrace our most profound truths, we become more confident in ourselves and feel more connected to the present moment.
What happens when we foster connection? Life becomes more meaningful. You don’t ruminate on the banality of working, paying bills, and running errands – you learn to enjoy the moments in between that make life worth living.
